MILBORNE Customer Applications

SMS (short message service) has become a hugely successful technology used daily by the vast majority of cell phone subscribers around the world.

SMS is now a major revenue generator for communications service providers (CSPs) with billions of SMS messages sent every day. SMS has become popular because messages can be sent at any time, even if the receiving cell phone is offline at the time. It is supported by all cellular phones on virtually any network anywhere in the world and can be read when convenient by the recipient so it is less disruptive/invasive than a phone call.

Typical applications using SMS include:

  • Person-to-person – text conversations between individuals
  • Cell phone marketing – sending offers and discounts to signed-up members
  • Welcome roamer – sending messages to network visitors
  • Information – news, data, weather, sports results etc is sent to members upon request
  • Downloading – ringtones, wallpapers and pictures can be encoded and sent via SMS

The CSPs may charge the requesting user where the information is requested (pulled), the information provider where the information is sent (pushed) or both where opportunities arise. Certain SMS messages such as billing information or service requests are often free to users, offered as part of the overall network service.

Telesoft Technologies MILBORNE SMS & USSD Gateway provides a high-capacity gateway to connect up to SMS applications simultaneously to the GSM network. Developers create applications using simple peer-to-peer (SMPP) protocol that hides much of the signaling complexity associated with network. The MILBORNE translates SMPP to SS7 MAP signaling supported by the GSM network and vice versa, allowing fast and efficient program development.
